That's true, there are some proposals to modify gravity in such a way as to account for the observations. I have plans to write a deep dive into that idea some time soon.
It also sounds like our instruments had been picking up the data for a while, just nobody had put two and two together and figured out it implied lightning. Still pretty cool to imagine it all though!
